'DELTA DAWN' TO 'STAY ALL NIGHT'
Texas Titans: Tanya Tucker and Willie Nelson backstage at the 1975 CMA Awards, October 13, 1975. Photo:From the Raeanne Rubenstein collection at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum
Tanya Tucker and Willie Nelson have more than music and Texas roots in common—including a flair for the unexpected. Tucker started early, releasing her first Top Ten single, "Delta Dawn," in 1972, and leaving jaws agape as listeners realized the haunting tale of a haunted woman was sung by a preternaturally powerful thirteen year-old girl. Nelson tried to keep it inside the lines, but as he neared forty and returned to Texas, a long-haired hippie troubadour replaced the clean-cut Nashville songwriter, and country’s Outlaw spirit was soon turning long-cemented convention firmly (and, some say, permanently) on its head.
